Liquid crystal material could save pilots from lasers

Hidden dangers of laser irradiating aircraft, it is a very dangerous thing to irradiate aircraft with laser: sudden strong light will have a huge impact on pilots and seriously threaten aviation safety. However, because the light color of the laser "attack" is uncertain, scientists have struggled to find a single way to stop the "colorful" laser attack.

      The laser irradiation sounded the normal flight of the aircraft, and some aircraft were forced to return due to the laser attack. Globally, laser attacks have become a growing security concern. Many people like to irradiate aircraft with lasers during critical stages of takeoff and landing. Although they thought it was just a prank, the glare could distract the pilot, causing temporary or even permanent visual impairment, and the pilot was severely affected by the laser.

      The previous solution was that pilots, etc. needed to pull down the light-blocking glass or wear special goggles during takeoff and landing. The measures were mainly effective for green lasers, but they were powerless for other colors of lasers. This causes great inconvenience. What's more, its protection can only target specific wavelengths of laser light.

Recently, some researchers said that this problem can be solved by adding a special liquid crystal material to the windshield of the aircraft. Protection can be achieved without making fundamental changes to the windshield of the aircraft.

The liquid crystal material in the glass interlayer will scatter green and blue light, but it has been proved by experiments that the neatly arranged liquid crystal can block about 95% of the red, blue and green laser light through light scattering, absorption of laser energy and cross-polarization. Moreover, the liquid crystal can also block the laser light irradiated with different power and different angles.
